This song is a direct response to the internal resistance we face when we're creating something special - we somehow convince ourselves that we're undeserving of success, or that our path needs to be a struggle in order to be valid.

As a songwriter who is 'past his prime' in the eyes of pop culture, I can assure you that your value doesn't end until you decide to stop learning, stop change, stop evolving, and stop helping. As long as you are pursuing your purpose, you're on the righteous path, and that path doesn't care how old or burned out you are.

I address a few issues from a life I no longer live, mentioning killing time and wasting my conscious hours being messed up - and although I'd prefer not to have done those things in hindsight, they're part of my story now and I wouldn't change where I am now.
